Ounce of Weed

It doesn’t matter who or where you’re buying weed from, cannabis is always sold in present denominations such as eighths, quarters, pounds, ounces, but how many grams are in these denominations? In most cases, the prices are set per oz (ounce), and when you buy eighths or quarters it means that you’re buying ⅛ or ¼ of an ounce. So let’s take a look at our quick conversion chart and learn a bit more about these denominations.

Quick Conversion from Oz to Grams

  • (⅛) Eighth ounce = 3.5 grams
  • (¼) Quarter ounce = 7 grams
  • (½) Half ounce = 14 grams
  • (¾) Three-quarter ounce = 21 grams
  • Full ounce = 28 grams

What Does An Ounce Look Like

It’s hard to know what an ounce looks like because it depends on flower density. Now, an ounce is an ounce and will always be an ounce but depending on how dense is your flower, an ounce could be 30 - 40 big nugs or 10 - 20 small/medium-sized nugs.

Ounce of weed: what does an ounce look like?

One full ounce gets you around 60 joints!

But just to give you an idea, with an ounce of marijuana (aka 28 grams) you’ll be able to smoke around 100 bowls or roll up to 60 joints, whereas with a gram you’ll be able to roll 1 - 2 joints, with an ⅛ around 7 joints, with a ¼ 14 joints and with a half-ounce up to 30. If you’re finding it hard to imagine how much weed this is, make sure to take a look at the picture above.

How Many Grams in an Ounce: Conversion Guide

As you may know, there are two metric units, imperial and metric, so basically, you’re converting pounds to grams or the other way around. As you can see in our quick conversion chart at the beginning of this article, an ounce is sold as 28 grams, but an oz isn’t exactly 28 grams, neither is an eighth is exactly 3.5 g or ¼ exactly 7 g. But why? Well, let’s look into it.

How many grams in eighths?

In order to calculate an eighth we just have to divide an oz which is exactly 28.3495231 g by 8, which is 3.5436903875 grams. But it would be extremely hard to weigh exactly 3.5436903875 grams, so retailers just round it down to 3.5 g because most scales weigh up to 3 digits.

How many grams in quarters?

And it happens the same with quarters, a quarter is basically an ounce divided by 4 or two eighths. This means that a quarter is exactly 7.087380775 g, but again, it can be hard to weigh exactly 7.087380775 g without the right weed scale so it gets rounded down to 7 grams.

How many grams in a half ounce?

A half-ounce, as the name suggests, is an oz divided by 2. That would be exactly 14.17476155 g but sold as 14 grams.

How many grams in a three-quarter ounce?

As for the quarter ounce, you probably understood it by now. So a quarter ounce is half an ounce + a quarter or ¾ of an ounce, as the name indicates. You can calculate three-quarters of an oz but the easiest way to calculate it is to subtract ¼ from an ounce. That would be 28.3495231 g - 7.087380775 g which is exactly 21.262142325 grams, aka 21 grams.

How many grams in a full ounce?

And a full ounce is just a full ounce, no need to do the math. An ounce is usually sold as 28 g but it’s exactly 28.3495231 g.

How to Weigh An Ounce Without a Scale

If you cannot afford or find a scale, don’t worry, there are a couple of different techniques you can use to weigh your weed without a scale. These methods can definitely help you can help you know approximately how much weed you have left if you’re in a hurry but if you’re looking for precision, remember that nothing is better than a good trustworthy scale.

The Ruler & The Penny

This is a simple and easy method to weigh your weed, you only need a ruler and a coin, not necessarily a penny. In order for this to work, you’ll need to know exactly or approximately how much the coin weighs. As a guideline, a 1 euro coin weighs approximately 7.5 g and a quarter dollar weighs 5.5 grams.

Ounce of weed: the ruler and the penny

Weigh your weed without a scale!

Now, you don’t have to use a quarter dollar or euro coin, just see what coin you have in your wallet and look up on the internet how much it weighs. So once you know how much the coin weighs, all you have to do is use the ruler as a scale, just place the weed on one side and the coin on the other, once the ruler is perfectly balanced you’ll know you have that amount of weed.

The Plastic Hanger Method

With the plastic hanger method, all you need is a plastic hanger, string, and scissors. This method is similar to the ruler method as you also need a coin to act as a counterweight. So all you have to do is cut the top of the plastic hanger and drill a hole into the center of it, then make a hole on the right and left, ensuring they’re distanced equally from the middle. Then cut three pieces of string of the same length and pass one on each side of the hanger and one in the center. Then all you have to do is hang the plastic hang from the string in the middle and hang the coin on one side and the weed on the other, once it’s balanced it means you have that amount of weed.

The Weed Scale App

An easier method is to use any weed scale apps. Now, these apps are not 100% reliable but it’s as easy as entering the app or play store and downloading an app. But again, a scale is always the best option if you’re looking for precision.

When Should You Buy an Ounce

So basically, what determines how much weed you buy is either your tolerance, how often you smoke, or what you can afford, this means that an ounce can be too much weed for you but not enough for others. So now that you know exactly how much an oz, eighth, quarter, and all preset denominations are, let’s take a look at what would be the right choice for you.

A gram of cannabis

A gram of weed is good to roll one fat joint, two medium-sized joints, or take 2 - 3 bong hits. People who buy grams are most often consumers looking to try a new strain or brand before buying in bigger quantities or just occasional consumers who smoke a joint from time to time.

An eighth of cannabis

An eighth of weed or an eighth of an ounce will get you around 4 - 5 medium-sized joints, 1 - 2 blunts, or 12 - 15 bong hits. For a regular consumer, an eighth (aka 3-5 grams) can last from 1 - 4 days, depending on how often you smoke.

A quarter of cannabis

A quarter of cannabis flower gets your around 7 - 9 joints medium-sized, 3 - 5 blunts, or 20 -30 bong hits. A quarter (aka 7 grams) will last 7 -10 days depending on how often you consume cannabis.

A half-ounce of cannabis

A half ounce (aka 14 grams) can last as long as you wish to as it depends on how big you roll your joints. For avid consumers, it won’t last more than 7 days but for a regular consumer, it could last up to 3 or 4 weeks.

An ounce of cannabis

Buying a full ounce basically saves you a couple of trips to your local dispensary. People usually buy a whole ounce when there’s a special deal or when they’ve tried the strain and want to stock up. When buying an oz there’s no need to be very disciplined as you can roll a 1/4 blunt and you’ll still have 21 g left!

A pound of cannabis

After 28 g (aka an oz) you’ll jump to much higher quantities. A pound of weed or approximately 450 g is usually bought by retailers, dispensaries, or medical cannabis clinics as in most legal states, you are limited to purchasing 28.5 g of cannabis and anything higher could violate the law, depending on where you live.

How to Measure The Amount Of THC Or CBD

Another piece of weed measurement is how to measure the cannabinoid content of the weed. Now, it’s impossible to measure THC or CBD at home unless you have the proper equipment but let’s talk about the average THC and CBD content in legal cannabis dispensaries.

In places like California, the average THC for flowers can range from 15  to 30%, keep in mind that this doesn’t measure weight but the percentage of cannabinoids in the flowers. For extracts and concentrates such as shatter, wax, or hash, the cannabinoid content is much higher, reaching up to 90%.

As mentioned, there’s no way to measure cannabinoid content without proper equipment but don’t worry, if you’re buying from a legal dispensary it should give you this information on the label.

How Much Does An Ounce Of Weed Cost

Now that you know the two most important measures in cannabis, it’s important for you to know that not only weight but also cannabinoid content will dictate the price of the oz (and consequently eighth, quarter, gram, etc..).

Ounce of weed: how much does an ounce of weed cost?

An ounce of weed can cost as little as $220 and as high as $500 depending on where you live.

Obviously, low-quality bud will be much cheaper than top-shelf bud, so let’s take a look at a couple of examples of how much an ounce of low-quality and top-shelf weed costs around the world. Just keep in mind that prices may vary according to the legal status of cannabis in the specific state or country.

Canada

Weed is legal in Canada so it’s relatively easy to get your hands on an ounce of marijuana. On average, an oz of low-quality bud costs around $202 dollars and an oz of top-shelf weed for around $291.

United States

Just like in Canada, weed is also legal in the United States but not in all states so prices can vary a lot. For example, New York has recently legalized cannabis but for a long time had strict cannabis laws so an oz of low-quality bud goes for an average of $200 whereas an oz of top-shelf for around $400.

In California, the first state to legalize medical cannabis, an oz of medium-quality flower will cost you around $230 and an oz of high-grade weed for around $300-350. And in Texas, recreational use is still illegal so you'll have to pay around $400 to $500 for an oz of top-shelf and an average of $290 for medium-grade flower.

Australia

In Australia weed is still illegal but has a medium/high social acceptance so it won’t be super hard to get your hands on an oz of high-grade weed but you’ll have to pay an average of $ 320.

Europe

Cannabis is still not legal in Europe but weed is fairly accepted, depending on the country and this can affect the price of an ounce. For example, France has one of the highest numbers of weed smokers in Europe and an oz goes for around $265. In other places like the United Kingdom and Spain, an oz of high-grade cannabis ranges from $300 to $400.

Final Thoughts on Converting Ounces to Grams

Now that you know what to expect when visiting your local dispensary, make sure to pay extra attention or write down how much an oz is in grams so you don’t end up buying more (or less) than you need or want. As mentioned before, everyone has their own preferences when rolling a joint, some may like it bigger and some smaller, but a study conducted back in 2011 concluded that the average weight of a joint is around 0.6 g so keep this in mind when shopping for weed at your local dispensary!
