One of the earliest forms of consuming cannabis is cannabis tea. Known by various names such as weed tea, ganja tea, or weed tea, it refers to cannabis-infused tea that can make you high. It’s a quick way to consume weed; however, it's not as simple as just throwing buds in hot water.

Like edibles, cannabis tea allows both recreational and medicinal consumers to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of cannabis without the smell and potential risks of smoking but with an extra advantage, ganja tea doesn't contain food allergens and is fairly quick to prepare. Cannabis-infused tea can be used for several purposes, such as managing pain or boosting your mood, meaning that making the perfect infused tea is an art in itself since the recipe will depend on how you want to feel.

Different variations, ingredients, and preparation methods serve different purposes. Combining different herbs with the effects of THC and CBD allows for unique experiences with a delicious taste. Whether you want to relax, focus, or just have a good time with friends, read on for the best ways to make ganja tea and how to maximize its benefits.

What is Weed Tea?

Basically, ganja tea is regular tea infused with cannabis leaves and/or buds. When heated, the leaves/buds release cannabinoids such as THC and CBD, which are responsible for the effects associated with cannabis.

Is weed-infused Tea the same as Weed Stem Tea?

Yes, however, THC tea is usually made with cannabis buds or trimmings, cannabis stem tea is made from the often discarded stems of the plant, ensuring no part goes to waste. The downside being that stem tea is milder than tea made with weed nugs as the stems do not contain as much resin as buds.

How many grams of stem do I need to make weed tea?

Since stems contain around 0.3% THC at best, you’re going to need a lot of weed stems. If you have a high tolerance, we recommend half a cup of stems worth, keep in mind that the process might take longer than with buds given stems are more fibrous. Also, the process is much more efficient if it is done with weed so we recommend flower for best results.

Can I use dabs for weed-infused tea?

Of course! Just like with flower, all you have to do is decarboxylate the concentrate either before use or via steeping in hot water. Make sure to use solventless extracts or concentrates since you don’t want any CO2 or alcohol in your tea.

We recommend rosin because it has a lower temperature threshold and you can make it fairly easily at home, guaranteeing the quality of the product.

How much weed do I need for ganja tea?

How much weed you need depends on how much tea you’re making and how potent you want it to be. Remember that if you’re using dry flower, you wo need more than if you’re using cannabis butter or cannabis oil as THC is fat-soluble and binds better to fat than water.

How much THC is in weed tea?

The potency of the tea depends on the amount of weed used and how long you let the nugs steep in the water. For example, if you use 1 gram of weed with 20% THC, it contains 200 mg of THC. However, if you don’t know the exact amount of THC, use the same amount you would use in a joint, then experiment and adjust as needed.

Why make Cannabis Tea?

Before diving deep into the best marijuana tea recipes, it’s important to understand why infused tea is a good alternative. Like regular tea, marijuana tea offers a soothing and enjoyable hot beverage while allowing you to incorporate the benefits of cannabis into your routine. But what exactly are the benefits?

  • Pain: Certain cannabinoids, such as CBN and CBD, can reduce inflammation and pain associated with conditions like arthritis.
  • Sleep: Cannabis can help alleviate insomnia and promote better sleep by calming the mind and regulating your mood.
  • Appetite: Cannabinoids can trigger hunger signals, making it ideal for those who struggle to eat due to illness.
  • Mood: Properly dosed cannabis allows you to experience uplifting, joyful effects without inducing anxiety or more potent psychoactive effects.

So by combining cannabis with aromatic tea blends, you can craft the cannabinoid-rich hot drink that better suits your needs.

Does marijuana tea get you high?

Yes!! But the cannabinoids found in cannabis are not water-soluble, which means you need a fatty substance like milk or butter, combined with heat, to activate the psychoactive effects. Alternatively, you can steep the weed in plain boiled water, which may still work but at a reduced potency.  However, if you want to have the full experience, it’s highly recommended to infuse butter, coconut oil, or milk, and then mix it into your tea of preference.

What are the effects of cannabis tea? Is ganja tea more potent than smoking?

The effects of cannabis-infused tea will vary slightly from person to person, but it generally offers a more potent and longer-lasting high than smoking. This happens because, when eaten, THC is metabolized by the liver, which transforms it into 11-hydroxy-THC, which is much more potent than Delta-9-THC (regular THC).

Additionally, smoking weed limits how much THC you can inhale, whereas when eating or drinking, nothing is wasted.

How long does it take for THC tea to kick in?

Since marijuana tea is a weed edible, the effects are similar to weed cookies or cake, for example. The effects of marijuana edibles or beverages generally manifest slowly, taking anywhere from 30 minutes to 90 minutes for the full effect to kick in. This is why it’s important to eat edibles in moderation, always start with a low dose and wait at least 120 minutes before ingesting more.

Why make weed tea when I can smoke it?

Rolling a joint is surely quicker but, as mentioned before, the effects of infused edibles are much more potent and long-lasting, offering a different experience than smoking. Also, cannabis is often used by patients who cannot smoke due to health reasons.

If you either can’t or don’t want to smell like weed, edibles, and marijuana tea are great options because they also offer stealthiness.

How to make THC Tea?

Finally, the moment you were waiting for. How to make THC tea? Well, brewing the perfect mug of weed-infused tea is fairly simple, but first, you need to choose what you want to experience.

For a more uplifting effect

For a more uplifting effect, consider a Sativa-dominant flower for that energy kick to start the day. You can also pair it with herbs like lemongrass for an even more energizing high.

For a more relaxing effect

For a more relaxing effect, go with an Indica-dominant flower since Indicas offer more relaxing properties, consider a decent CBD content for a good night of sleep. Complement it with chamomile or lavender to enhance its soothing, relaxing effects. So let’s start with the cannabis tea recipe!

Weed Tea Ingredients
1 tbsp of unsalted butter or coconut oil Honey or sugar
Cannabis flower 2 teabags of loose-leaf tea
Time needed: 10 - 15 minutes

Step 1: Grind the cannabis flower

Grind the cannabis or chop it with a sharp knife until it’s broken up but not completely powdered.

Step 2: Bring to a boil

Bring the two cups of water to a boil.

Step 3: Add the butter or oil

Once it boils, add the butter /coconut oil and allow it to dissolve. The fat is needed for the cannabinoids to bind to, and at the same time, the heat will decarboxylate (activate) the cannabinoids.

Step 4: Add the flower and the tea

Add as much weed as you want (we recommend 1g per two cups of water) and add the teabag.

Step 5: Let simmer

Allow to simmer for 7 to 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Keep in mind that you should NOT boil the cannabis, make sure to simmer on low heat!

Step 5: Remove from heat

After 10 minutes, the tea is properly infused. You can turn off the stove and remove the tea from the hot burner.

Step 6: Remove tea bags, filter and strain

Take the tea bag out and discard it. Then filter out the weed from your tea with the help of a coffee filter. We recommend using a tea infuser for the cannabis flower and loose-leaf tea as it will make your life much easier than filtering the plant matter with a coffee filter.

Step 7: Sweeten and enjoy

Add the sugar, milk, or honey, and enjoy your insured weed-infused tea!

In Conclusion

From its ancient origins to its contemporary use as a soothing elixir, cannabis tea is a great consumption method for those who need a quick and simple way to medicate. Whether you seek relaxation or pain relief, among other things, this delicious infusion offers a natural way towards wellness.
