Every cannabis consumer has their preferred strain. Some prefer more modern terpene profiles such as Runtz or Gelato, while others go for more old-school flavors such as OG Kush and Amnesia Haze. However, one thing every consumer agrees on is that you always want it to be as high quality as possible, that is, well-grown, properly dried and cured, and as fresh as possible.

This is not the case with regs. Reggie weed, also known as schwag, dirt weed, brick weed, or ditch weed, is slang for low-quality cannabis flower, deriving from the term “regular” or “regs,” a lower quality of cannabis than top-shelf quality.

Where does Reggie Weed/Brick weed come from?

Since reggie weed or brick weed refers to low-quality weed that’s sometimes compressed into a brick for easier transportation, regs can come from different places.

Generally speaking, this type of weed originates in South America, America, or Thailand, where black market growers use industrial presses to compress (brick) weed, making it easier to transport to the US and Europe.

How is brick weed made?

Generally speaking, schwag weed is not a special type of seed but rather weed that isn’t trimmed or cured, but harvested, dried, and then pressed into bricks using a hydraulic press. In some cases, top brick originates from top genetics from well-known seedbanks; Plants can even be well-grown to a medium/decent quality, however, when harvest time comes, whole plants are piled and sundried, which frequently causes mold since parts of the plant may start to rot.

Once the plants have dried, the bigger leaves, roots, and bigger branches are removed, and then the dried cannabis is pressed with a hydraulic press, producing one huge brick of weed which is then cut into smaller pieces, then packed and shipped.

What is Reggie Weed?

So now you know that reggie weed is a low-quality cannabis flower. But what does that actually mean? Well, it refers to cannabis that is low quality because it has not been grown by professional growers. It is most often grown illegally on unregulated farms deprived of optimal growing conditions. This results in weed that cannot be identified since their origin is unknown.

What Does It Look Like?

Top-shelf weed has that typical weed nug appearance, exhibiting different shades of green, along with hues of purple, pink, and sometimes blue. It has lots of resin and a delicious aroma that can be smelled from afar.

On the other hand, dirt weed looks like popcorn buds or weed that has not fattened up properly, usually exhibiting green, brown, and mustard coloration (which is not very appealing at all). Upon closer inspection, you’ll notice that there are no trichomes to be seen, which means that it will have very little smell or no smell at all.

Too Many Seeds

A distinct characteristic of reggie weed and brick weed is that they tend to have a lot of branches, leaves, and, more commonly, seeds. In some cases, regs can have even more seeds than smokeable weed. So if you ever resort to low-quality weed, make sure to remove the seeds, branches, and any other impurities before consuming it.

What Does It Feel Like?

High-quality weed is usually firm to the touch yet kinda springy, similar to squeezing a tennis ball. Reggie weed comes as dry as it gets and is usually full of sugar leaves since it was not properly trimmed. Also, dirt weed can come in brick form, which alters its shape, often looking like the tip of a square.

What Does It Smell Like?

When identifying top-shelf weed, smell is one of the main things to consider. While no single terpene profile defines top-shelf weed, the strength and depth of the terpene profile can indicate the quality of the weed.

Brick weed may sometimes smell like ammonia, dirt or hay.

Brick weed may sometimes smell like ammonia, dirt or hay.

When identifying reggie weed, the golden rule is also to trust your nose. However, the smell will not be pleasant. Regs or brick weed usually smells like dry hay, dirt, or ammonia, sometimes with slight chemical notes. These off-putting aromas are a clear indicator that the weed was not well grown, processed, or preserved.

What Does It Taste Like?

In terms of "smokeability" or taste, reggie weed offers only dry smoke that’s harsh on the mouth and throat. In terms of flavor, you may get herb, grass, or hay notes that are unpleasant and another clear indicator of its low quality.

What are the effects Like?

Whereas top-shelf weed can get you super high for hours on end, reggie weed produces a quick and mild high. Due to its low THC levels, dirt weed or brick weed doesn’t have the potency to deliver a strong psychoactive effect. In fact, depending on how bad the quality is, you may not feel any high at all.

In the CBD department, the story is the same. Regs also do not contain high amounts of CBD since improper storage degrades the resin,  where all cannabinoids (among other things) are stored.

Reggie Weed vs Brick Weed

Reggie weed, low-quality weed, or simply bad-quality weed is common all over the world and can go by many names such as schwag, dirt weed, reggie, and regs, among others. This means that both terms refer to the same harsh, dry, and crumbly weed, with the main difference being that brick weed comes compressed in a brick, whereas reggie weed usually comes in its natural form (flower).

Is reggie weed safe?

Since schwag is widely consumed all over the world, yes, we can say it’s fairly safe. However, there are some considerations to have in you smoke brick weed regularly.

  • Schwag can contain contaminants such as mold or pesticides, so it’s essential to get your schwag from a reputable source to minimize health risks.
  • Schwag may contain residue from other drugs stored with the weed so make sure to inspect your regs before consumption.
  • Low-quality weed contaminated with harsher chemicals can lead to severe health issues if consumed regularly, so always try to prioritize safe sourcing.

How to improve my brick weed?

We’ve established that brick weed or reggie weed is the lowest quality weed available, however, sometimes that’s all we have available….so how can we improve brick weed?

There are two different ways to improve brick weed but nothing beats good weed!

There are two different ways to improve brick weed but nothing beats good weed!

Let’s start by saying that there’s no way of recovering what wasn’t there in the first place, meaning that you won’t be able to turn schwag into top-shelf weed, however, there are a couple of tips to make your experience more pleasant.

Improving Flavor

A good tip to improve the flavor of regs is to add orange or lemon peel to the jar. So go ahead and get some fresh citrus peels and place the weed inside the jar, followed by the citrus peels. Make sure to “burp” (let the jar breathe) every day for 10 minutes and monitor the flavor for a week or so. This method will also help rehydrate the weed.

Rehydrating

A simple and effective way to rehydrate your brick weed is to place a small/medium piece of schwag inside a clean sock or cheese cloth and carefully steam it over boiling water for 30-45 seconds at a time. Make sure to not over-do it to prevent it from getting too wet. Remember to let it air dry on a kitchen towel for 4 to 6 hours before consumption.

In Conclusion

It really doesn’t matter how strong, pretty, or aromatic your weed is as long as it’s good enough for you and safe for your health. If you live in a place where cannabis is illegal and you need to buy your weed from the black market, make sure to inspect it before consumption in order to try to smoke the safest schwag possible. You do NOT want to consume pesticides, heavy metals, or other harmful chemicals daily as they can lead to severe health issues.
