Before making your own gummy bears and trying them, let’s learn a bit more about the history of weed edibles. Historians have discovered that people in ancient Persia were mixing hash with spices, and eventually started adding sweeteners to improve the taste and butter to improve the texture. Historians think this is where the first edibles were made. People all over the world consumed weed in edible form in different ways and with different preparation methods, but the cannabis edibles we know today became popular later in history.

Fast forward to the war on drugs, people were afraid of storing weed in flower form, so they started making weed brownies to be able to consume cannabis without the risk of getting caught. When the word got around, weed brownies became one of the most popular consumption methods as they’re super tasty and don’t have the risk of inhaling smoke (or the smell). Now that you know when edibles were invented, read along to learn how to make your own weed gummy bears from any type of cannabis seed and how to consume them.

Sebastian Good tells you his recipe.

1. Why make THC gummies?

If you can smoke weed, then why make cannabis gummies? Well, smoking is the most common consumption method because it’s easy but smoking consists of inhaling smoke, which is bad for you. On top of that, smoking vs eating weed are completely different experiences.

How to make weed gummy bears: why make thc gummies

Edibles are extremely popular amongst medical consumers as it leaves out the smoke.

When you consume it orally, the high could be completely different than smoking as the effect can take more than 1 hour to kick in and the effect is much stronger and can last up to 8 hours or more. So apart from offering a stronger and longer-lasting effect, weed gummies make it possible to leave out the harmful side of smoking weed. So if you’re looking to have a different experience now and then, or just want to consume weed in a healthier way, read along and learn how to make your own marijuana gummy bears.

2. How to Make Weed Gummy Bears?

So now that you know a bit more about edibles, here’s what you need to make some delicious weed gummies.

Ingredients

  • 1 pack of flavored gelatin (of your choice)
  • 43 grams of unflavored gelatin
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • ¼ cup of corn syrup
  • 1/4 cup of weed oil (check below for a full guide on how to make canna-coconut oil)
  • 11 grams of sunflower or soy lecithin

Equipment

  • Cooking pot
  • Candy mold, preferably bear-shaped
  • Spatula
  • Syringe
  • Non-stick spray

Instructions

Step 1

Mix the flavored and unflavored gelatin in ½ cup of cold water and let it sit for 5 minutes. Then add the gelatin and water mix with the corn syrup, pour it into a saucepan and let reach a simmer on low heat.

Step 2

Then mix the mix constantly to prevent the gelatin from boiling and once white foam begins to form at the top, remove the foam and reduce the heat. Once the mixture has melted and combined properly, remove it from the heat and let it cool down.

Step 3

When the mix cools down, mix in the cannabis oil and soy or sunflower lecithin and stir thoroughly until combined.

When making your own edibles, make sure to calculate the dosage first!

Step 4

Once combined, spray the molds with non-stick spray, fill the syringe with the gelatin mix and fill in the molds. Then use a spatula or a flat object to remove the excess from the surface.

Step 5

Once full, place the molds in the refrigerator for at least one hour, do not freeze as it can keep the gelatin from setting. After 1 hour in the fridge, you can remove the gummies from the mold, place them onto parchment paper and let them air dry.

Notes

Remember that just like other edibles, weed bear gummies will take at least 30-60 minutes to kick in so give it some time and make sure to feel the effects before eating more. And never leave them unsupervised, especially if you live with people that don’t consume cannabis to avoid emergencies!

3. Weed Gummy Bears Side Effects

Yes, weed gummies will get you high, but only if they contain THC. However, you can make CBD cannabis gummies if you’re looking for the health benefits of edibles without the psychoactive effect. Remember to always follow safety guidelines to avoid scary situations and, if you’re taking other medication, talk to your doctor first.

4. Do Weed Gummy Bears Expire?

Well, weed gummy bears won’t make you sick, even if they’re expired but the THC or CBD in them will degrade and they will lose their potency. In most cases, infused gummy bears retain their potency for up to one and a half years, so you can store them for a while but remember: they last up to 18 months, so try to consume them before that.

5. Safety with Gummies and Other Edibles

As mentioned, edibles can easily take up to an hour or more to kick in, so patience is your best friend in this case. Even if you don’t feel anything after 30 or 60 minutes, we recommend waiting. Maybe your metabolism is slower or you’ve eaten them with a full stomach, but don’t worry, they will kick in.

How to make weed gummy bears: safety with cannabis gummies

Keep your cannabis gummies sealed and stored away at all times.

So always start with a small dose and be patient as the effect can differ from person to person. Also, keep in mind that you should keep the weed gummies in a safe place as a child, pet, or an unsuspecting adult could eat the gummies without knowing. So to avoid a trip to the hospital, keep your weed sealed and stored away.

6. How are Weed Gummy Bears Different from Regular Gummies?

So how do weed gummies differ from regular gummies? Well, the process for making weed gummies is basically the same as regular gummies. Both require water, gelatin, and waiting for the mixture to set in, so the main difference is that weed gummies contain THC, CBD, or both cannabinoids. So basically, cannabis infused gummies and regular gummies are the same but one will get you high and the other one will not.

7. How Many Gummies Should You Eat?

The number of gummies you should eat depends on a lot of things, including your tolerance, the effect you wish to get, and how potent your weed oil is. If you’re buying weed gummies at your local dispensary, you’ll know exactly how much THC or CBD you’re getting but when making your own, it’s always a good idea to try with a lower dose, such as a half or even a quarter just to get an idea of how strong your gummies are.

Always start with a low dose and work your way up as edibles are much stronger than smoking a joint.

Having said that, if you know how to calculate THC dosage, make sure your weed oil contains enough weed so that each weed gummy contains around 5 mg of THC, this is a good amount to start with.

8. How to Make Your Own Cannabis-Infused Coconut Oil (or Butter)

Ok, so we may have gotten a little ahead of ourselves with showing how to make the dosed gummies, but no instructions on how to make that delicious cannabis-infused coconut oil first! There are a bunch of ways to do this - from quick and easy, to slower and more involved. If you're in a huge rush then check out the quick oil recipe, but if you have the time we always recommend going for the more relaxed version (especially if you have a slow cooker on hand).

Quick Canna-Coco Oil Recipe

For this recipe all you need to grab is -

  • 10 to 14 grams of your favorite strain
  • 500 ml of extra virgin coconut oil
  • 1 spatula
  • Cheesecloth or a strainer

Let's make some quickly infused oil!

  • First up, grind your weed into small chunks. You don't want it too fine, but also not too nuggety. If you have time to decarb it first, do so. If not, no worries. Decarbing is a simple and easy process, where you heat the weed for 30 minutes in a low-heat oven at around 200°F.
  • Next up, pour your coconut oil into the saucepan and heat on low to medium heat. Allow it to melt completely before adding in your ground-up cannabis. Stir them around together, making sure all of the green is evenly coated in oil. Let this simmer together for around 30 minutes, stirring often to ensure nothing sticks or burns.
  • Once your time is up, strain the cannabis from the oil using a cheesecloth or strainer (a fresh pillowcase also works).
  • You now have your canna coconut oil and can use it however you wish! Enjoy!

Slow-Cook Canna-Coco Oil

This method is great if you want to let the infusion take its time and get that strong, potent flavor and effect. For this one, all you need is:

  • 20 to 28 grams of your favorite strain (this can be scaled up or down)
  • 1 liter of extra virgin coconut oil
  • 2 liters of water
  • 1 slow cooker (or high-walled saucepan if you're using the stove-top)
  • 1 spatula
  • Cheesecloth or a strainer

Method -

  • First things first, grind your weed up into small pieces (but not too fine) and decarb in a low-heat oven for 30 mins.
  • While this is happening, add the oil and water to your slow cooker or saucepan.
  • If using the slow cooker, set it to low heat and allow everything to melt together. Once melted and everything is mixed in, add your decarbed cannabis into the mix. Stir gently and then cover with the lid or foil. Let this simmer away on low heat for 8-12 hours.
  • The longer you can leave it simmering, the stronger and more potent your infusion will be.
Once you're happy with how it tastes, strain the cannabis from the oil using your cheesecloth or strainer into a large bowl, cover it with some foil, and put it into the fridge.
  • Remove after a few hours, and the oil will have solidified on top of the water.
  • Remove the oil, reheat it, and pour it into whatever container you please for safekeeping.
  • And that's it! Enjoy your newly made slow-cook infused Cannabis Coconut Oil!

9. FAQ

How long do gummy edibles last?

If you’re wondering how long weed gummies last, in general, weed edibles last much longer than smoking or vaping, lasting up to 6 or 8 hours. But it depends on how potent your weed oil is, so the stronger the weed oil, the stronger and longer-lasting the effect will be.

Are there 100mg gummies?

Of course, but in some places, the legislation requires the 100mg gummies to be divided into 10mg individual pieces. 100mg is a lot of THC so if you’re not an avid consumer, make sure you don’t eat the whole 100mg at once. And, if you have a high tolerance and cannot find 100mg THC gummies, you can always follow this recipe and make your own.

Why am I still high after eating edibles?

Well, if you feel like the effect is too potent or is lasting too long, don’t panic. You already know you’ve consumed cannabis so you won’t have an overdose or anything like that, so just drink a lot of water and enjoy, the effect will wear off soon. But use this as a lesson and the next time you’re planning on consuming edibles, eat a lower dosage!
