6. Macro, Secondary and Micronutrients

So, there we go. Our full guide on how to perfectly use Shogun nutrients with our seeds. But we haven't really explained how cannabis nutrition works, or how to create the perfect balance for your plants. When it comes to cannabis nutrition, it’s all about finding a good balance of essential nutrients and trace elements. Different strains have different nutrient requirements, so you may need to adjust your feeding chart accordingly.

Plant nutrients are split into three main categories - macro, secondary, and micronutrients. Each category plays an important role, and it's important to understand the way in which each contributes to your plants' growth. Before we dive into the nutrient categories, we should first mention the difference between mobile and immobile nutrients

Nutrient Mobility

Mobile nutrients have the incredible ability to travel freely throughout the plant, providing vital resources wherever they are most needed. Nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) are all classified as mobile macronutrients, and some of their secondary or micronutrient counterparts also qualify for this classification. In other words, your plant knows exactly which areas need additional nourishment; it simply sends these special nutrients straight there.

Unlike mobile nutrients, immobile ones are unable to move around the plant. This means that they must be present in specific places at precise moments both within and outside of the plant. Since a majority of micronutrients fall into this category, it is paramount to get them just right from day one.

Macro and Secondary Nutrients

The most critical components for the health, growth, and progress of cannabis plants are macro-nutrients. With these three nutrients alone, your crop will still do well; it won't reach its full potential but you can definitely harvest a decent yield at the end of the season. Feeding with just these main nutrients is enough to keep your plant alive and kicking. When it comes to ensuring healthy plant growth, the 3 main macros must be present in large amounts; however, secondary and micronutrients are also necessary for optimal development. Let's explore each of these elements more closely to understand the purpose they serve.

Nitrogen (N) - Mobile

Nitrogen is often the star component of fertilizer in veg stages, and with good reason. This essential nutrient helps plants grow strong stems and lush foliage, allowing them to flower or bear fruit. Additionally, nitrogen aids in producing chlorophyll for photosynthesis; proteins also rely on it for their development. In short, this crucial element promotes rapid growth as well as robust plant structuring.

Phosphorus (P) - Mobile

During the flowering stage of cannabis growth, phosphorus is absolutely vital— it not only aids in energy storage and transfer but also helps with flower formation. Plus, it's integral to root development as well as cell division so that other nutrients can be used more effectively.

Potassium (K) - Mobile

Potassium is a key player in the growth and health of cannabis plants, as it helps to regulate water absorption and balance, photosynthesis, energy metabolism, and stress tolerance. Aside from aiding protein synthesis through amino acid absorption, Potassium also increases flower density – making this an essential nutrient for flourishing crops coming into the final few weeks before harvest.

Secondary Nutrients

Calcium (Ca) - Low Mobility

Calcium is a nutrient that can move partially within the soil and roots, fortifying cell walls to promote optimal root growth. By neutralizing organic acids, calcium helps with vital nitrogen absorption processes while gifting plants strong development that flourishes over time.

Magnesium (Mg) - Mobile

Magnesium is a vital mobile nutrient that plays an indispensable role in the development of lush, thick buds. It helps form chlorophyll and aids photosynthesis, while also regulating nitrogen absorption to reinforce cell walls' durability. When plants have access to enough magnesium, they develop large and dense blooms - making it essential for successful harvests.

Sulfur(S) - Mobile

Sulfur is a mobile nutrient that helps form proteins and enzymes, as well as aiding in the formation of amino acids. It also helps to keep pH levels stable in the soil and helps with the absorption of phosphorus.

Micronutrients

Micronutrients, or trace elements with concentrations less than 1000 ppm, are fundamental for the health of a cannabis plant - however, they should be offered in smaller amounts compared to macros and secondaries. These micronutrients assist enzyme activation and other metabolic processes like photosynthesis, respiration, nitrogen fixation, and protein synthesis.

Even though micronutrients are often required in lesser quantities than macros, this does not make them any less crucial. An absence of one or more trace elements can significantly interfere with the health and productivity of a cannabis plant; hence, it is essential to have all necessary micros present in your nutrition solution.

Iron (Fe) - Immobile

Iron plays an important role in the process of photosynthesis, as it helps chlorophyll absorb light energy. Additionally, iron is essential for enzyme and amino acid formation. Should your plants suffer from a lack of this micronutrient, you can expect to see stunted growth and yellowing leaves on the older growth.

Manganese (Mn) - Mobile

Manganese is essential for a number of processes, such as photosynthesis, nitrogen fixation, and forming of critical proteins. With the help of this element in your soil, plants can reach full maturity quicker while simultaneously accelerating seed germination rates.

Molybdenum (Mo)

Molybdenum is an essential element for optimal nitrogen metabolism, enabling plants to absorb and utilize the nitrogen they intake more effectively. Additionally, it balances pH levels within cells and bolsters overall plant structure.

Boron (B) - Immobile

Boron is an indispensable micronutrient for robust plant growth and flowering. It contributes to cell wall formation, as well as transporting sugars from the leaves to other parts of the plants and within cells. A deficiency in boron could be calamitous for your plants - with glossy leaf texture being one telltale sign. The most commonly cited cause of this is when pH levels are too high.

Zinc (Zn) - Mobile

Zinc is vital for the synthesis of multiple plant enzymes and helps promote chlorophyll formation. What's more, zinc aids in producing strong stems and lush leaves that are vital to a healthy garden.

7. In Conclusion

Shogun offers several high-quality fertilizer lines for all types of substrate, each one with a specific NPK ratio that guarantees optimum plant growth in either soil, coco, hydro or aeroponics, just make sure you respect the recommended pH range to avoid deficiencies.
