Best Pot Brownie Recipe

For most people, there may not seem there’s a difference between consuming a marijuana brownie and weed, but smoking weed vs eating it can produce very different experiences. So you might be asking yourself “is there a difference between smoking weed and eating weed?” Yes, there is, but it depends on several different factors.

Despite both consumption methods allowing marijuana to enter the body, once absorbed, marijuana is processed in different ways. When inhaled, the smoke passes through the lungs where it can cause coughing and problems breathing, wheres when eaten, it’s processed in the stomach. And although fewer cannabinoids are absorbed when eaten, the effects tend to last longer and take longer to kick in because of the long process that the cannabinoids have to go through when in the stomach.

So if you are looking to make your own cannabis brownie from homegrown cannabis seeds, look no further. Read along and learn all you need to know to make the best weed brownies with a vegan option! But first, a little bit of information on what to expect from this cannabis brownie recipe.

The Preparation

Before starting, it’s important for you to have in mind that making cannabis brownies can be a little more complicated because you need to activate the THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids in the marijuana flowers. And to do this, you’ll need to decarboxylate your marijuana, which consists of heating up the marijuana flowers for up to an hour, depending on the amount you’ll be using. So let’s learn a bit about what you’ll need and the decarboxylation process before starting with our delicious weed brownies.

Kitchen Utensils You’ll Need

In order to get started, first, let’s gather the materials and ingredients we’ll need, starting with the kitchen utensils. For this recipe, you’ll need:

  • 20 cm Baking Pan;
  • Saucepan;
  • Oil;
  • Mixing bowl and;
  • Spatula or spoon,

Required Ingredients and Proportions

As for the ingredients, you’ll need the same as you would when making regular brownies, but you need to get your hands on either marijuana-infused sugar, cannabutter, or cannabis oil and the following:

Brownie Recipe Ingredients
Cannabutter, weed sugar, or oil 64 g
Flour 64 g
Cocoa powder 43 g
Sugar 128 g
Salt 1.4 g
Baking powder 1.4 g
Eggs 2
Vanilla extract 5 ml

If you don’t have the cannabis-infused oil, sugar, or butter yet, don’t worry, we’ll get into more detail briefly, but first, let’s talk about what you need to make vegan or glute-free cannabis brownies.

Vegan & Gluten-Free Brownie Recipe

If you’re looking to make vegan cannabis brownies, it’s pretty simple. All you need to do is substitute the butter, oil, or sugar for a vegan alternative and the chocolate for non-dairy chocolate. And if you’re looking for a gluten-free option, just substitute sugar for caster sugar and the flour for gluten-free flour. Remember that the amounts are the same as in the original recipe!

Now that you’ve gathered e everything you need, let’s learn how to make your own marijuana-infused sugar, oil, or butter at home.

The Decarboxylation Process

In order to make cannabis brownies you first need to activate the marijuana flower, this happens because the cannabinoid compounds in marijuana are only activated when heated, meaning that if you eat it raw you would not feel anything. Decarboxylated weed can have many uses, as mentioned above, you can use marijuana butter, marijuana oil, or marijuana sugar, and all of these products start with decarboxylation. So let’s learn how to decarboxylate weed correctly, and then we’ll teach you a bit more on how to make the different marijuana products you can make and their pros and cons.

Weed brownie recipe & effect: decarboxylation

During decarboxylation your buds will turn brownish, this means you've decarboxylated your buds correctly.

So let's start with the decarboxylation process. First of all, preheat your oven to around 110-120℃, while the oven is heating up, grind your cannabis flower and place it in a small bowl for now. Now grab a baking pan, put parchment or baking paper on top, and spread the ground weed evenly. After everything is prepared, go ahead and put the baking pan with the weed in the oven, stirring every 15 minutes. Once the weed has a greenish-brown color, the decarboxylation process has ended. Keep in mind that depending on the amount of marijuana you use, the process can take a bit longer. There’s no exact amount of time as it depends on several things, so always remember to pay attention and once it’s golden brown, it’s ready!

How to Determine The Dosing

In order to know exactly how much weed you should use in your edibles, you’ll need to know the exact THC or CBD content in your flowers as this will dictate how strong your edibles will be. When buying your weed in a legal dispensary, you can ask for that information but depending on where you get your marijuana from, you may not have the cannabinoid content, so in cases like this, we recommend a maximum of 10-15 grams per 450g of butter, oil or sugar.  But if you happen to have the cannabinoid content, all you need to do is simple math and it’s very important, especially if you’re not an avid consumer and don’t want to have a bad experience. So all you need to know is:

  • Cannabis flower in grams and;
  • THC and/ or CBD content.

Once you have this information, calculating dosage is pretty simple. All you have to do is multiply:

Flowers in grams x THC or CBD content = Total cannabinoids

So, for example, let’s say you’re using 10 grams of flower with a THC content of 19%, all you have to do is:

10 grams x 19 x = 1900 mg THC

The result you get would be the total amount of THC in milligrams, so in this case, if you use 10 grams of flower with 19% THC, the total amount of THC in your edibles would be 1900. Always keep in mind that the recommended dosages are:

Recommended for THC per dose What To expect
First-time consumers 1 - 2.5 mg Anti-anxiety, slight pain relief
Chronic pain 2.5 - 15 mg Improves mood, strong body relaxation, focus
Medium tolerance 15 - 30mg Induces sleep, Euphoria
High tolerance 30 - 50 mg Potent pain relief, can alter perception
For medical marijuana patients who need bigger doses 50 - 100 mg Can cause negative effects if not accustomed

As you can see in the table, 1900 mg THC (like in the example given) can be too much depending on your tolerance so always make sure to calculate how much you need before making edibles as you can always eat more but cannot go back once you’ve eaten too much.

The Step-by-step Process

Now that you know everything you need to make weed brownies, how to calculate THC dosage, and the recommended dosage depending on your tolerance, let’s take a look at how to make the best cannabis-infused brownies step-by-step.

Just keep in mind that there are several different ways to make cannabis brownies, so it doesn’t really matter how you do it as long as you’re satisfied with the results. Remember that the main goal is to make something tasty, that tastes just like a regular brownie (without that strong plant taste) that still gets you high, so it’s not that hard but it can take a couple of tries to get it just right.

Step 1

  • Preheat the oven to 175°C and grease the baking pan;
  • Mix all the dry ingredients and set aside, remember that this is when you should substitute the flour and/or sugar if you’re making vegan or gluten-free brownies;
  • In another bowl, mix the wet ingredients: marijuana butter, sugar or oils;
  • Then add the eggs and vanilla extract.

Step 2

  • With everything partially mixed in, beat on medium speed for one minute.
  • Now mix the dry and wet ingredients together.
  • Beat everything on low until the mixture is homogeneous.
  • And then place in the baking pan.

Step 3

  • If you want to add chocolate chips or any additional topping, do it now.
  • Bake the brownies for 25-35 minutes, depending on the consistency you want to get.
  • Allow the brownies to cool down for 30 minutes for the best consistency.

Step 4

Now it’s just a matter of enjoying. And remember, these are weed brownies so never leave them unsupervised!

Other Great Recipes to Use With Your Cannabis-Infused Coconut Oil or Butter

Ok, so we have gone through how to make cannabis-infused butter and coconut oil. We have discussed why decarbing your buds before is so important. We have looked at how to estimate the general dosage. We have gone through a bunch of infusion options. And, we have listed our favorite weed brownie recipe. But you know what we haven't chatted about?

Weed brownie recipe & effect: other great recipes

Other great alternatives for those who enjoy cannabis-infused edibles!

All the other options for edibles, apart from brownies. Not everyone is the biggest fan of chocolate (or even brownies themselves - crazy), and not everyone can eat all of the ingredients that are vital for a banging, chewy, soft, and super moist brownie. So, here we will have a look at the edible options that go beyond your regular, everyday space brownie. First up, our favorite vegan edible option

Vegan Edibles

Almost all vegan edibles start with cannabis-infused coconut oil as the base, and to be totally honest, canna-coco oil is our go-to for all edible recipes these days. It's just so much more versatile than canna-butter, and if you start with a decent extra virgin coconut oil, the flavor is out of this world. Some of the best vegan edibles you can make at home are:

  • Magical Cannabis Granola
  • Cannabis-Infused Energy Balls
  • Cannabis Honeycomb
  • Cannabis Chocolate Slice

Cannabis Chocolate Slice

Our favorite of the four options is the Cannabis Chocolate Slice. It's easy to make, requires zero baking skills, and is endlessly customizable. The recipe we use is:

Ingredients

  • 400 grams dark cooking chocolate (make sure there are no milk or dairy products if you want it to be strictly vegan)
  • 250 ml canna coconut oil
  • 180 ml coconut milk
  • 100 g dried coconut
  • 150 g dried fruit
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon powder
  • 2 drops of vanilla essence
  • A pack of ginger cookies, or whatever cookies you prefer

Method

  • Using a double boiler, slowly melt the dark cooking chocolate with the coconut milk, and very slowly add the canna coconut oil to the mix. You want to be constantly stirring while you add the infused oil, and you want to do so about 50 mls at a time. If you rush this step the oil will not emulsify with the chocolate and the whole thing will end up splitting. You can add the vanilla in at this point also.
  • Blend the cookies to a fine powder and slowly add them into the mixing pot whilst continuously stirring.
  • Then, add all the rest of the ingredients. You can add whatever takes your fancy at this stage. We love throwing a handful of crushed hazelnuts in also, but really anything sweet and delicious works.
  • Once the mix has cooled to near room temp, you can pour it into Tupperware containers and throw it into the freezer overnight. The next day you will have a bunch of perfectly set, fully vegan, cannabis-infused chocolates ready for eating!

Cannabis Honeycomb

To make a batch of cannabis honeycomb, you need just a few ingredients and some basic kitchen equipment. All you will need is:

Ingredients

  • 200g white sugar
  • 15 ml honey
  • 100 ml canna coconut oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • A candy thermometer

Method

  • Put the sugar, honey, and cannacoco oil into a pot and place it on the cooker. Stir the mixture slowly until all of the ingredients have melted.
  • Once all the ingredients are dissolved, you can turn up the heat to medium and allow the mixture to warm until it reaches 300°F.
  • Once it reaches 300°F, remove the pot from the cooker and quickly add in the baking soda to the mix.
  • Make sure you stir the mixture constantly and pour it into a lined baking tin. Allow the honeycomb to cool for about 30 minutes before cutting in and indulging.

Tinctures

Tinctures are a great way of taking edibles. They are made from alcohol-based infusion methods and can be taken sublingually (under the tongue) or added to beverages. Taking edibles in this way is much faster acting than edibles, and can be more accurate in terms of dosing. The process for making tinctures is fairly simple. You will need dried cannabis flower, Everclear or vodka, a mason jar, cheesecloth, and something to strain with (like a funnel).

Weed brownie recipe & effect: tinctures

Tincutres are a great option for medical consumers.

Start by decarbing your buds in the oven for 30 minutes. This will activate all the cannabinoids and make them available for infusion. Then, grind the buds into a fine powder and add them to your mason jar. Top with Everclear or any other clear, high-percentage alcohol that is safe for human consumption, and seal shut. Shake the jar vigorously for about 30 seconds and store in a dark, cool place for 1-2 weeks. After it has steeped, strain the tincture through a cheesecloth or coffee filter and store it in a dark glass bottle.

Topicals

Cannabis edibles don't all have to be ingested, edibles can also come in the form of topicals. Topicals refer to any type of cannabis product that is applied directly to the skin and can include salves, balms, and lotions. Cannabis topicals are great for localized relief of aches and pains. The cannabinoids in edibles bind to our CB2 receptors and can provide relief from inflammation and pain. To make edibles topicals, start by making a salve. Get some beeswax, your pre-made canna-coconut oil, and some essential oils of your choice (optional, but definitely recommended).

Melt the beeswax in a double boiler, then slowly add in your canna-coconut oil, stirring continuously until emulsified. Then stir in your essential oils and pour into a shallow mold or container. Once cooled, your edibles topical is ready to use! The great thing about edibles topicals is that they can be used directly on the skin without having to worry about getting high. They are great for soothing aches and pains, and the essential oils add an extra level of aromatherapy.

Alternate Cannabis Infusion Options

In this topic, we’ll learn a bit more about the different infusion options available to make cannabis-infused edibles. As mentioned throughout the text, you don’t necessarily have to make marijuana butter, you can also make cannabis coconut oil (or olive oil, or any other oil you prefer) and cannabis sugar.

Weed brownie recipe & effect: alternate infusion options

You don't necessarily have to use butter, you can also make cannabis-infused sugar, oil or milk!

All these different weed products are made with the same process but can have different uses, for example, you can mix marijuana sugar with milk or tea, but cannot add butter, for example. So all marijuana products will have the same effect but different uses, depending on what you need them for. Here’s a bit more information on each one of them.

Cannabis Oil Or Cannabutter

Infusing oil or regular butter is probably the easiest way to make cannabis brownies, that’s why we used it in this recipe. All you have to do is melt the butter, mix it with the decarboxylated weed and let it simmer on low heat between 71 - 93 °C for 2-3 hours, then strain and let cool down. Your marijuana butter is ready!

Cannabis-infused Sugar

Making cannabis-infused sugar can take a little more time than butter but opens up a whole new world of possibilities. In order to make weed sugar, you’ll first need to make a weed tincture with high-proof food-grade alcohol. All you have to do is mix the alcohol and decarboxylated weed in a glass jar. Invert the jar Upside down instead of shaking to avoid breaking down the marijuana, so just gently invert the jar 4-5 times, place it in the freezer for 5 minutes and then repeat the whole process 3 more times. Once you’ve strained the weed out, just mix the alcohol with the sugar and spread the sugar on a baking pan to allow the alcohol to evaporate.

Cannabis Concentrates

You can also use a cannabis concentrate to make your cannabis edibles, although it may be hard to find as these products can only be found in legal cannabis dispensaries and can be quite expensive. On the other hand, starting with concentrates makes your life much easier because most concentrates are already active, so all you have to do is mix it with alcohol or butter and it’s ready.

Decarbed Cannabis Flower

Decarbed cannabis flower is the most common way of making edibles as usually, people who make edibles at home grow their own marijuana. So there’s nothing much to say about this other than keep in mind that there are different types of marijuana flowers with different cannabinoids, not only THC and CBD, so depending on your needs, remember that there are also CBG ad CBN strains, for example, that might be better suited for you.

Leftover Cannabis Pulp

If you’re not a grower and don’t have a lot of marijuana available, remember you can reuse the leftover weed from making oil or butter for your edibles. This means that after making cannabis butter, you can reuse the same marijuana to make oils or sugar, for example.

What Are The Effects Of Cannabis Brownies

Cannabis edibles affect us differently because it goes through a different process than when smoking. The intensity of the effect and type of effect you experience will depend on the amount of marijuana used, the cannabinoid concentration of the flower, and several other elements such as your age, tolerance, weight, your mood etc…

Weed brownie recipe & effect: the effects of edible cannabis

it's highly recommended to know exactly how strong the edible is before eating it.

In most cases, the commonly reported effects are pain relief, sleepiness, happiness, and the feeling of being high. This is why you need to calculate the dosage correctly, if not, you could get a much stronger effect which might not be what you are looking for.

How Long Do Cannabis Brownies Take To Kick In

It’s hard to say exactly how long it will take for you to feel the effects because it depends on a lot of things. In general, edibles are slower to take effect and it can take from 30 minutes up to 4 hours for you to feel something. Also, due to the delayed effect, edibles tend to last longer, lasting anywhere from 4 to 8 hours, depending on the individual.

How Do I Make More Potent Cannabis Brownies

If you have a high tolerance or are dealing with medical issues that require a higher THC dosage, you can make more potent weed brownies easily. All you need to do is either use more marijuana or flowers with a higher cannabinoid content. Basically, the better the quality going in, the better the quality coming out.

So calculate total THC content and adjust the dosage to your preference based on the table given above. If you don’t know the THC or CBD content of the flower you’re using, you can use 28 grams of flower to 450g of butter, oil, or sugar instead of 10-15 grams.

Storage Instructions

Despite being “special”, cannabis brownies are just regular brownies so they don’t need special storage or anything. Just store them like you would store your leftover cake or brownies and make sure you consume them within 7 days. The only important thing to comment here is that you should keep them stored away, especially if you have kids or live with someone who doesn’t consume weed as there is no way to tell they contain marijuana just by looking at them.

Notes And Expert Tips

  • Keep in mind that if you’re going for softer or fudgy brownies, the toothpick trick does not work as the fudge will not leave the toothpick clean.
  • For softer brownies use ½ cup of flower instead of ¾ of a cup.
  • If using butter, let it soften to room temperature for a more creamy consistency.

Now that you’ve learned everything you need to make some delicious cannabis-infused chocolate brownies, it’s time to start baking. Remember, always start with the best seeds from reputable seed banks. By now you probably understood that the better the flower that goes in, the better the brownie that comes out, so make sure to take a look at our autoflowering genetics with up to 27% THC that makes for deliciously potent cannabis edibles.

FAQ

Can I use a premade box mix?

Of course. What makes cannabis brownies special is the marijuana butter, oil or sugar, so you can use any premade chocolate brownie mix without any issues at all.

How much cannabis should I use?

It depends on your tolerance. For weak/medium intensity go for 10-15 grams per 450g of butter oil or sugar, and for stronger weed brownies use 28 grams per 450 g.

Will making cannabis brownies make my house smell?

Unfortunately, yes but not during the whole process. It’s highly recommended to leave the windows open during the decarboxylation process as this is where you’ll definitely be able to smell the strong marijuana aroma. But this process takes from 30- 60 minutes, once it’s done you won’t have to worry at all.

What if my dog ate my cannabis brownies?

As mentioned, it’s extremely important you keep the cannabis brownies out of reach as they are activated and can be dangerous if your family isn’t aware of what they contain.

What is the final dosage of each brownie?

The final dosage depends on your preference but as a guideline, go for 2 mg per marijuana brownie for beginners, 10-15 mg per weed brownie for those with a medium tolerance, and +30-50 mg for avid consumers.

Conclusion

So, there we have it. All the info you need to make a wide range of infused bases, our best pot brownie recipe, and some extra edible options. Happy baking!
